Blueberry

Vaccinium corymbosum

Blue summer berries on a shrub with very particular soil needs.

Make it part of your growing collection.

A LITTLE EVERYDAY CARE

Help it thrive.

A few things worth knowing.
01

Test the soil first

Check soil acidity before planting. Highbush blueberries need acidic conditions; unsuitable pH can cause yellow leaves.

02

Match flowering times

A second compatible cultivar flowering at the same time can improve berry size and yield, even though plants are self-fertile.

03

Prune once established

From the third year, remove dead wood and maintain the shrub's shape in late winter. Check the variety before choosing a pruning approach.

Data sources & uncertainty
Sunlight

Sun or partial shade is listed. 2+ hours is a broad category, not a yield guarantee.

Source · checked 2026-09-14
Moisture

Qualitative moisture preference from the growing description; ordinal model, not a measured watering schedule.

Source · checked 2026-09-14
Soil pH

Numeric preferred pH range given in the growing description.

Source · checked 2026-09-14
Drainage

Free drainage is recommended; the ordinal distinction is an interpretation, not a measured drainage rate.

Source · checked 2026-09-14
Nutrients

No comparable numeric nutrient requirement verified; excluded from scoring.

Source · checked 2026-09-14
Soil texture

Listed or described textures are examples, not an exhaustive list of tolerances. Unlisted texture alone is not a hard exclusion.

Source · checked 2026-09-14
Plant spacing

RHS gives 1–2 m between plants depending on mature size. Current 1.2 m is an estimate for a smaller shrub.

Source · checked 2026-09-14
Growing depth

Approximate planning value; cultivar, growth stage and container form change the requirement.

Typical height

Approximate planning value; cultivar, growth stage and container form change the requirement.

Growing season

Broad growth preference only; excluded from scoring because no location or planting date is known.
